The Vegan Guide to Valencia, Spain: Eat, Explore, & Enjoy
Discover Valencia, Spain, with this ultimate vegan guide. Explore the best plant-based eats, attractions, and experiences in the city.
Introduction
Spain has been on my travel bucket list since one of my Spanish professors had a capstone trip to Barcelona and Madrid. I went on a trip to Cuba instead and had a great time.
Years later, I “convinced” my youngest sibling to study abroad in Valencia, Spain, so I had an excuse to travel there. In other words, I told him to apply to a study abroad program he was about to apply for anyway.
Here is my vegan Valencia travel guide.
Valencia Packing List
I am a forward planner. My definition of last-minute packing is packing items for a carry-on and check-bag 3 days before the flight and having everything ready with the personal items the night before. Yet again, I tend to forget or misplace things when I rush to do things at the last minute, so I should plan ahead.

Days 1 & 2: Arrival
June 11-12, 2023
My travel day was a mixture of relaxing and nerve-racking. Since I had gone to church the night before, I had extra time that morning, taking my sweet time getting ready and getting my cats prepared to stay home alone in the basement. I left my house a little early, around 10:15am, and headed to my parents’ place, a few minutes away. This trip is with my parents and a couple of my siblings.
We left a little after 11:00am for a flight a little before 2:00pm in Cedar Rapids. On the way there, I ate the lunch I had prepared on Friday: two vegan cheese sandwiches, white grapes, cherry tomatoes, mini peppers, and a mini Silk chocolate.
Not too long after the drive began, my dad got a text saying the flight was 25 minutes delayed to Dallas-Fort Worth when we hardly had any time during our layover. We only had 42 minutes to go across the airport to the international terminal for our flight to Madrid.
On the bright side, we had some time to eat a real lunch at the main airport bar and grill, The High Porch, with burgers and fries. Unfortunately, there were no vegan options besides fries and chips with salsa. Granted, I doubt there would be more than one person per month wanting some veggie burger around here.
The flight to Dallas-Fort Worth was about two hours long. I edited one of my YouTube videos and ate my free airplane snack of four Lotus Biscoff biscuits. After arriving in Dallas in terminal A29, we rushed to our flight to Madrid. Luckily, we took the train most of the way there, which was quick. They were boarding before we landed, but with the huge flight, they were still halfway through boarding when we arrived.
We were in Gate D36, right next to Auntie Annie’s. We had enough time to go to the bathroom, and my brother got some pretzel nuggets before being the last people to board the plane. There was no extra security for our domestic flight to go onto our international flight. Instead, when we were checking into our flight to Madrid, some high-tech facial recognition software recognized me with my passport picture and seat.
Before our flight to Madrid, I had low food expectations because there was no apparent vegan option when requesting a special meal. Initially, I thought my dad was joking about the various dietary meal options. Still, besides the regular supper and breakfast, they had a vegetarian meal labeled “Asian Vegetarian” with the description “Spicy vegetarian meals with limited use of dairy products.” That did not sound vegan; even if it was, I was afraid this would upset my stomach. The other options were bland for digestive specialties, child’s meals for 2-5 years old, diabetic, and gluten intolerant.
I was fortunate that there were two meal options: a meat option and a plant-based option. My family enjoyed the chicken and rice with a mushroom sauce. The plant-based meal was penne pasta with a tangy, flavorful sauce with herbs and veggies. The small side salad was vegan due to having no dressing on top and containing shredded iceberg, cabbage, carrots, and cherry tomatoes with an EVOO with Balsamic on the side.
There was a mini water and cream crackers that were accidentally vegan. The cream crackers reminded me of a fancier saltine, which was thicker and had less salt than a saltine. The dessert was a chocolate caramel bar that contained eggs and dairy. There was butter and cheese on the platter that contained dairy. I assumed the roll contained dairy, but I was not sure. I got an extra salad and crackers from my parents and a couple of snack pretzels for munchies while watching movies on the airplane.
On both flights, I made gardening YouTube videos while repeatedly pestering my siblings. I got some good pictures of clouds going to Dallas but struggled to see outside because I was in a middle-aisle seat. We had decent seats on our international flight, with three columns of three in my section. I am used to being farther back in the plane, so it was pretty comfy, besides occasionally having the cart go next to me.
Since my sack lunch wasn’t my supper, I had sandwiches and grapes while watching M3gan. I decided to watch another movie called Champions, and the setting is Iowa, where I’m from, with fellow vegan Woody Harrelson. My breakfast included mini peppers, Wild Wonders tomatoes, and a chocolate brownie Clif Bar.
The airplane breakfast included Greek yogurt, grain-free granola, and a fig bar. I wasn’t a big fan. Granted, I don’t eat dairy yogurt, and I’m not that into figs or granola. At least two of the three food options were vegan, though.
I felt soar in my butt sitting too long on my 8.5-hour flight. My feet ached from wearing shoes too long. I felt way more tired than usual, running around the airport and sitting constantly over going to bed over time.
There was no line for international customs, and we got our luggage okay. Afterward, we rented a Mercedes-Benz van through Enterprise. It wasn't clear where the car people were initially, but they were in the garage instead of their main office. We first struggled to get out of the parking lot, but at least the car rental representatives moved some cars out of the way to facilitate our exit.
We stopped in Factoria GA to go to Supeco for picnic food, the Spanish equivalent of Walmart. We had a picnic in the car. I had a white flesh peach, cherry tomatoes with hummus, and my leftover pretzels from the airplane. We tried to visit the nearby castle, but it was fenced off. We stopped at a store and a couple of gas stations along the route to Valencia. One of them was in Villargordo del Cabriel, which is near some beautiful mountains.
We asked the rental representative where to go on the way to Valencia. They recommended the beaches in Valencia because that’s the closest beach to Madrid. We understood why that was because there were hardly any stops on the main highway to Valencia, probably because most traveled via train. It was a gorgeous car route. Madrid reminded me of Texas (drier with sand), while Valencia looked similar to Colorado (forest and mountains) and Utah (clay soil), depending on the place.
A week before the trip, I told my dad he had to get an international driving permit from the United States Embassy. It was a good thing that he listened to me. Right before we got to our Airbnb for the first time, the police pulled us over for a random inspection. That was a convenient time to be passed out from jet lag. A police officer asked my family something in Spanish or Valencian, and my father’s and brother’s response was they did not know Spanish. They pulled my dad over and asked for his driver’s license, passport, and international driving permit. I woke up after my mom made me open the van door so the police officers could briefly inspect the van.
After that, we finally arrived at the Airbnb and rested a bit. Then, we went out to eat for supper at LaL QiLa, an Indian restaurant nearby. I got falafel with mixed salad without onion and one plain Naan. I didn’t realize there was oil on the salad, so I thought it was okay with iceberg lettuce, corn, and tomatoes. The falafel was delicious but served cold, which I’m not used to at all. I folded it into pieces of plain Naan, which was tasty. Even though Naan tends to contain dairy and eggs, this restaurant's recipe didn't contain any.
We stopped at a vegan-friendly bakery called La Pastisseria Lliso right by our Airbnb on the way back. I got a vegan chocolate chip and nut cookie, which was yummy.
My family liked their treats. We also got some cucumbers, peaches, and bananas at Ansar Market.
When I tried to work on my blog at the end of the night, I was so tired that I passed out right after I started writing. My brother and sister had to remove my laptop and phone from my lap before I realized I should have been lying down rather than sitting upright.
Some general observations I noticed:
- lots of graffiti everywhere
- common crops: almonds, grapes, olives, wheat, etc. (compared to corn and soybeans in Iowa)
- super narrow streets
Day 3: Beach
June 13, 2023
After getting ready for the day, I started my morning by watching tennis during breakfast with Dad and then Spongebob while waiting for everyone else to get ready.
For breakfast, I had a couple of pieces of plain toast with slices of cucumber, peach, and banana.
We went to Bar Gaspar Aguilar 27, right by our Airbnb, for brunch. I got French fries (patatas fritas). The server gave us an olive appetizer bowl. I smelled it to see if I should give it a chance. Since I usually don’t like canned olives and didn’t like the smell of fresh olives, I passed on trying a fresh olive. The French fries were tasty and super hot. Their appearance reminded me of McDonald’s fries, except they were not as crispy and had less salt.
My dad and I stopped by the vegan-friendly bakery again. I got a scrumptious vegan chocolate Neapolitan pastry. I’m not a big fan of dark chocolate, but it was terrific. My dad got a pineapple, mango, and papaya smoothie and shared it with my mom and siblings, and they liked it.
We walked around one of Valencia Marina’s beaches before having lunch. I couldn’t take that many pictures because some were topless or naked. We tried getting a decent view of the cargo ships loading on the dock. We ended up checking this out on the dock of a nearby boating school. I admit that this wasn’t our finest moment. Some of the students’ moms kept staring at us, but we got the pictures we wanted and left before any instructors or staff could notice us there.
We had lunch at Boa Beach. Initially, I planned on ordering the vegan burger, but I saw someone bring out a stack of pancakes and changed my mind. I ordered vegan pancakes, which were delicious despite containing my nemesis, oat milk. They were oat pancakes with maple syrup, blueberries, bananas, strawberries, pineapple, and powdered sugar. The fruit on top made them very sweet. Some of my family got jealous of the great fruit I had loaded on my pancakes.
After our late lunch, we went to the same beach we had walked on earlier. While changing into my swimsuit, I dropped my phone into the toilet. I forgot that it was in the back pocket of my jeans since I usually don’t use pants pockets. Then, I dipped my toes into the Mediterranean Sea. It was cold, slightly chilly, but nowhere close to freezing. I found some pretty, colorful shells before we had to leave earlier than expected due to rain.
We went back to change, and I later struggled to find vegan food at places we hadn’t gone before. We ended up going to a grocery store called Consum. The weird thing was that my mom wanted Tums medicine, and the clerk recommended an herbal alternative. My brother found an equivalent at a nearby pharmacy without any trouble. They got burgers from Juanjo’s House.
I tried getting some vegan deli meat at Consum for sandwiches. Unfortunately, it was not vegan because it contained eggs. At least I found some Violife cheese slices at the store, which is enough of a meal for me.
I made grilled cheese with Violife cheese and brioche, a plate of celery and carrot sticks, bitter melon, papaya, and apricots, and a vegan croissant from the nearby vegan-friendly bakery. Soon after, I went to bed.
Day 4: Xàtiva
June 14, 2023
The morning started with breakfast at the Airbnb, which included brioche toast, slices of banana, cucumber, and peach, as well as leftover pieces of bitter melon and papaya from having supper.
We watched a bit of the Aniston/Sandler murder mystery sequel (Murder Mystery 2) before we headed to brunch at Bar Gaspar Aguilar 27, the same place we went to yesterday. I had French fries.
I grabbed a treat from La Pastisseria Lliso after I had my fries before heading to our next destination.
Quick story: We had some issues with the Airbnb dishwasher. The night before, Mom put some dishwasher rinse aid instead of dishwasher detergent, and nothing washed. Before breakfast, I put actual dishwasher detergent (Finish dishwasher tablet), but it still contained rinse aid in the detergent spot. The dishwasher and rinse aid concoction flooded on the floor and made the dishwasher bubbly like a bathtub. My bad, but how was I supposed to know it would do that?
Before lunch, we visited the Quart Towers, Silk Market, and Mercado Central de Valencia (Central Market). The Quart Towers was a quick stop on the way to the Central Market, giving us a marvelous view of Valencia. The Silk Market had many old, beautiful buildings. My favorite part was seeing the pigeons in the fountain and the citrus trees.
I had a love-hate relationship with the Central Market. I enjoyed many things there, like my fruit cup for snack, bulk options for beans, grains, and nuts, lovely food statues outside, and the plethora of fruits and vegetables. Yet again, I was so disgusted by all of the dead fish and piglets, smoked body parts, and prepared animal meats. The smell was horrendous, even with my little sense of smell. There are so many produce markets around the area that I highly discourage vegans from going here because the sights were depressing and disturbing.
We had lunch at our Airbnb. I had a couple of grilled cheese sandwiches and a produce platter with celery sticks and slices of apricot, peach, and cucumber. I wish we had had more meals out while we were in town. However, I prefer eating in our Airbnb over eating out, and I always do this at home.
We headed the long way towards Xàtiva, Valencia. Along the way, we got a sample of some of the crops grown in Valencia: sorghum and rice fields; orange, tangerine, lemon, lime, and olive trees; and many groupings of melon (not sure what type). We went to McDonald’s for a snack and bathroom break. There were no vegan meals there, but I was surprised about the few vegan sides: cherry tomatoes, apple slices, and a side salad.
We mainly went to Xàtiva to visit their castle, which required lots of walking and irregular steps. It was funny that some of my brother’s classmates came at the same time as us. His roommate was supposed to be there but missed the stop because he fell asleep on the bus ride there.
For supper, we ate at Milwaukee Food & Beer in Xàtiva. I ordered a vegan burger without pickles and onions, a side of fries, and an edamame appetizer.
- The burger had a huge sesame bun. The burger was very juicy and had a nice ingredient combo.
- The fries were soft and seemed homemade. They were also spicy, maybe with a bit of chili powder. I found them quite delicious, and they were my favorite regular fries on the trip.
- The edamame was a good temp. It was saltier than expected but still yummy.
My family found this eating experience very entertaining. There was a plump, stray dog there wanting scraps from restaurant goers, and the kid of the restaurant owners kept scaring birds and kicking dogs. Yet again, the child was a toddler who didn’t know any better, and my siblings’ regular reaction to misbehaving children was laughing over discipline.
After eating, we returned to the Airbnb, since it was late. Then, I went to bed.
Day 5: Nature
June 15, 2023
I started off the day with breakfast with a vegan apple and cream tart, a couple of pieces of toast, and cucumber slices. The tart had a great combo of cinnamon, apple, and cream. It tasted very fresh, even though it was at least 3 days old.
After taking multiple days to convince my family members to eat breakfast in over eating out, we got out of the Airbnb at a decent time and headed to section of town with all the museums. We ended up visiting the outdoor area right outside of the museums. It was kind of neat because they had some pools surrounding the museum district, and you can walk under the bridge to visit other places. We sat there for a bit until we figured out the science museum was open. The plan was to visit the science museum, have lunch at the mall, and finally go to the aquarium afterwards. We got a combo package for the science museum (Museu de les Ciències) and the aquarium (Oceanogràfic).
I enjoyed the science museum. It had a lot of exhibits, from deconstructing musical instruments to space to different forms of diseases (a relatively new exhibit due to Covid). We zoomed through the entire museum in a couple of hours, but we could have easily spent the entire day there.
For lunch, we went to Saler Mall right next to the museums. I ate at Pans and Company, which was known for having European style of a Subway menu. I got the vegan mozzarella pesto sandwich (called bocadillo in Spanish) with fries and tea.
- I mainly got the mozzarella pesto sandwich because that meal was one of the suggestions on the restaurant's digital menu when I was ordering. Surprisingly, it was pretty good. I was not sure what to expect. It was on multigrain bread with some dried sun tomatoes, arugula, and vegan mozzarella.
- The fries were thinner than I was used to, but they were still pretty good.
- I gave the tea to my dad and sister. My dad was so glad because the fountain drink he got earlier wasn’t that great, and it hit the spot.
My family went to a Mediterranean buffet, called Neco. There were no vegan options there besides the fruit bar, which kind of looked tasty based on the fruit pieces on my family members’ plates. The funny thing was one of the servers told me to leave the outdoor seating after my parents left to eat. I finished my sandwich and fries in Pans and Company and just sat in Neco until my parents and siblings finished eating. My dad wasn’t the biggest fan of the Mediterranean restaurant. That gave him and my brother an excuse to get ice cream at McDonald’s.
Note that as a vegan, my perception of aquariums is very different from the average bear. Vegans tend to be against aquariums, zoos, and any other place that considers nonhumans as a form of entertainment. I was surprised about how much space the sea creatures and birds had in their enclosures. They seemed to like their homes, and they had enough dolphins in the aquarium to have them alternate dolphin shows.
I did not pay much attention to the food options in the science museum, but I noticed a few vegan meal options at the aquarium. Right before attending the dolphin show at the request of the rest of my family, I went to the concessions for some water due to running out and discovered the Better Burger. It is a vegan burger option, and the meal option with fries and a soft drink. Besides having to remove vegan mayo on top, it was pretty good. There are more vegan meals than that, like the Better Frankfurt at the brat stand.
Since we had some difficulties with driving around the aquarium, we decided to eat in another part of town, instead of Saler Mall again. We had empanadas from Las Muns. There are two vegan types: cheeseburger and humita. I had two cheeseburger “muns,” which were delicious. Technically, you couldn't put a whole cheeseburger in a small empanada, but it tasted like crumbled up burger with gooey vegan cheese on top. It had a little tang but not much.
My parents were too tired to walk to the car and waste time getting parking, so they took an Uber back while my siblings and I walked back. I sort of regret that decision because we went in a few circles, and it took at least twice as long to get back to the Airbnb. We walked close to 12 miles, so I was getting pretty tired.
We stopped at a market on the way back to get breakfast and lunch supplies for tomorrow. I only wanted a couple of cucumbers to slice with my toast for breakfast tomorrow and Saturday. We got back okay. I prepared my stuff for our day trip, so I would be ready to go when we are supposed to leave.
Day 6: Waterfalls
June 16, 2023
On our final travel day in Valencia, we saw nearby nature attractions. I started the day off with breakfast at the Airbnb with toast, banana slices, and cucumber slices.
I wish I had the time I normally have on vacation to prep breakfast. I would enjoy having platters with fresh fruits and veggies to start off the day. I tend to cut veggie sticks, but I save those for lunch and supper as a side.
In the morning, we went on a hike to see Salto de la Novia (The Jump of the Girlfriend in English) near Narajas. It was very pretty.
I packed a vegan cheese sandwich for lunch. I should have packed more to eat because I was kind of hangry because of it.
I also was not getting my alone time that I was used to at my house with living with myself and my cats. That has been something I have struggled with since I moved out on my own because I'm not used to being around people every day all the time anymore. I'll work on it.
I was in a better mood in the afternoon after we got to Paraje Fuente de los Baños in Castellón. Even though I don't like swimming, it was relaxing to walk around in the hot springs.
Right before I took this picture, I got upset because some high schoolers were talking bad about me because I wasn't wearing a swimsuit at a hot spring.
So what? I was trying to prevent myself from getting skin cancer. Also, I was trying to have a good time, unlike this same group that wasted their field trip gossiping about everyone around them over having fun.
After we got back to Valencia, my parents and I went out to The Good Burger while my siblings went out to eat elsewhere because we could not get an Uber big enough to bring everyone.
The Crunchy Chickenless burger and sweet potato fries were incredible. I was very satisfied by the restaurant choice. My parents thought their regular burgers were okay, but Iowa burgers were so much better.
We ended up walking back to the Airbnb from there. Most of our walk was in Jardín del Turia, which is a beautiful park in the middle of the city.
I ended up playing on Gulliver Park, which is a massive playground for kids. I never had seen anything as big in my life and considered it more of an adult playground over a kid one. In reality, I was the only adult playing on it without a kid, but that was okay. I had no regrets.
We stopped at the store on the way back because I wanted some food for tomorrow, our travel day. I got some bananas to share for breakfast, carrots, grape tomatoes, and apricots. I packed a couple of vegan cheese sandwiches in there.
The trick to do this without an ice pack, since you cannot bring that through security, is freezing the sandwiches the night before.
Not too long before bed, I ate the rest of the papaya left in the fridge with a sliced banana. I'm not that into papaya, but I like it in a fruit salad, instead of on its own.
Days 7-8: Departure
June 17-18, 2023
Our last day in Spain was a travel day from Valencia to Madrid and then flying back home.
For breakfast, I finished the last cucumber with a sliced banana and apricots plus toast. I had the luxury of taking my time eating and getting ready because I am an early riser.
On the way to the airport, I ate a banana, baby carrots, and a vegan cheese sandwich. That was a smart move to pack food because we took forever to get through security.
Long story short, they changed planes on us at the last minute, so they had to change everyone's seats. There were a lot of upset individuals, including my parents, because they paid good money for nice seats, but almost everyone got downgraded and eventually got reimbursed later.
After we finally got through security, I had to get a random inspection after getting to our gate. It was easy and quick, but we had the time since we were very delayed with our flight.
By the time we got onto our flight, we realized we were going to be cutting it close to getting it to our next flight, but there was nothing we could do about it for the next few hours, so that was fine for now.
The airplane food was similar to last time's, pasta with tomato sauce, which was okay. I gave most of my food to my family due to it not being vegan, but at least that gave me the chance to eat the rest of my Spain food before landing.
I watched four movies on the way to Dallas: Don't Worry Darling, Spoiler Alert, Fences, and Armageddon Time. I was getting kind of sleepy by the time by the time I was watching the last movie because it was midnight in Valencia time when I began watching it.
I finished the flight with playing a few games through the in-flight entertainment, so I had everything put away by the time we landed and left the airplane.
By the time we landed in Dallas, we had to rush across the airport to get to the plane on time that was heading to Cedar Rapids.
We had to go through customs and security before heading on a shuttle to our terminal. Since the baggage was taking forever, we decided to split up. My mom, sister, and I headed to the flight while my dad and brother waited for the checked luggage.
The thing we did not factor into the equation was having to go in line to check our luggage from an international flight to a domestic one. My dad and brother just cut in front of line, begged to check it to our flight, and rushed to the gate.
My mom, sister, and I made it to the gate shortly before boarding. We had time to go to the bathroom, and I ate a chocolate chip Clif Bar. My food schedule was out of whack, so I was hungry for something. My mom and sister got pretzel bites from Auntie Anne's, since we were right by our arrival gate (D36 coming to Dallas and D37 leaving Dallas).
We waited to board at the last minute, and my dad and brother came fast walking. We were super lucky that they made it to the flight because my dad forgot to give us the car keys. We would have been stuck in Cedar Rapids for the night waiting for them to come on the next flight from Dallas, or we would have spent a lot on an Uber back home.
Unfortunately, our checked luggage did not. It made it to Cedar Rapids the next day though. I made it home at a quarter to 2:00am. I was happy that I had the rest of the day on Sunday to recuperate or else I would have been a zombie at work if I did not.
Final Thoughts
I was so glad that my brother had the chance to study abroad over the summer, so I had an excuse to go to Spain to visit him with some of my family.
I had a very different vision for this trip. I wanted to stop by Morocco and Portugal while we were there, but my mom wanted to stay around Valencia.
Next time, I would like to spend some time in the other parts of Spain, like Melilla, Barcelona, and Seville. It would also be nice to spend more time in the capital of Spain, Madrid, besides going to and from the airport.
Check out my other vegan travel guides below. Ciao for now!
